How to Recite Salaat (Namaz)
An example is given here showing Recitation of Two Rakats
To begin the Namaz one should be :
1. In Qiyam (standing position or if any person is physically not fit then in sitting position but stationed at one place) then make intention (Niyyat) to pray two rakats of a particular salat for the sake of Allah and the direction towards Ka`aba.
recite a particular salat, for instance reciting two rakats of Farz of Fajr then you have to make intention as under :
" I want to recite two rakats of Farz of Fajr for the sake of Allah with my direction towards ka`aba and then "
Raise both hands upto the ears (palms facing the Qiblah) say "Allah-o-Akbar"
اللهُ أَكْبَرُ (Allah is Great) and then hold the left hand with the right hand on top.
2. Recite sana :
سُبْحَانَكَ اَّللُهَّم َوِبحَمْدِكَ وَ تَبَاْرَكَ اسْمُكَ َوتَعَالَئ جَدُّكَ وَلَااِلَه غَيْرُكَ
Subhana kalla humma, wabe hamdeka, wata baara kasmoka, wata aalaa jaddo ka, wala e laha ghairoka.
Glory be to You Oh Allah, and praise be to You, and blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no one to be served besides You.
3. Then Recite :
اَعُوْزُبِالّلهِ مِنَ اشّيْطَانِ اّلَرجِيِِمْ
Transliteration :Auoozo Billahe Minash Shaitanir Rajeem ;
O Allah " I seek refuge from Shaitan "
And then say :
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillah hir Rahmanir Raheem ;
In the name of Allah the beneficent and most merciful.
4. Then Recite Surah Fatiha :
oالرَّحْمـنِ الرَّحِيمِ o الْحَمْدُ للّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
o إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ o مَـالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
o صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنعَمتَ عَلَيهِمْ o اهدِنَــــا الصِّرَاطَ المُستَقِيمَ
o غَيرِ المَغضُوبِ عَلَيهِمْ وَلاَ الضَّالِّينَ
Alhamdo lillahe rabbil aalameen. Ar Rahmanir Raheem. Malike Yaomiddieen. Iyyaka Na` Budo wa Iyyaka Nastaeen. Ehdinas Siratal Mustaqeem. Siratal Lazeena un amta Alaihim, Ghairil Maghdoobe Alaihim Walad Dualleen.
Praise is only for Allah, Lord of the universe.The most kind, the most Merciful. The Master of the day of Judgment. You alone we worship and to You alone we pray for help. Show us a straight path, The way of those whom You have blessed. Nor of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray.
It is very important to know that Surah Fatiha has three segments :
a. First three Ayats are recited by us to praise the Al-Mighty
b. The fourth Ayat is a strong commitment by us that we pray only to Allah and seek help from the Al Mighty alone.
c. The last three Ayats are recited by us to seek Allah's blessings and favours.
Surah Fatiha begins with the hamd of Allah ;
“ His Prais. None but Allah has the right to be praised. He alone is the Lord of the worlds. He alone is the Rabb, Who provides sustainance and innumerable blessings to His believers ”.
“ He alone is beneficent and ever merciful ”.
“ He alone is the Lord of the day of the judgment, has the power of sovereignty and no one has the courage to open his mouth before Him. Therefore no injustice will be done on the final day of judgment ”.
After Allah’s praise the next Ayat confirms the duty on all the believers ;
“ His creation must worship Him alone and turn towards Him for all kind of help “
This commands everyone to stay away from including any other with Allah means clearly to avoid Shirk. One must dedicate his or her act of worship like salah, Roza, Hajj and Zakat for Allah only. Furthermore it tells us to seek guidance and help only from Him.
The last ayats tells us to make dua and request Allah
“ He should show us right path, the path of the righteous people and pious servants of Allah and of those who were misguided and had to face His wrath “.
Surah No. 15, Al Hijr, Ayat No. 87
o وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ
And indeed, We have gifted you seven repeatedly recited verses (Surah Fatiha) and also given the Mighty Quran
Everyone of us is fully aware that Surah Fatiha is being recited millions of times in daily salaats all over the world by millions of believers. This proves the authenticity of the above revelation.
This is important that a person should memorise atleast ten to fifteen small surahs which will help him to recite rakats of different salats conveniently .
6. Then Add a Surah or one large ayat or three small ayats after surah Fatiha.
o وَلَا أَنتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ o لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ o قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ
o لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ o وَلَا أَنتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ o وَلَا أَنَا عَابِدٌ مَّا عَبَدتُّمْ
Qul Ya ayyohal kafiroon. La Abudo ma ta`budoon. Wala antum abeduna ma a`bud. Wala ana abedum ma abadtum. Wala antum abeduna ma a`bud. Lakum deenokum waleya deen.
Say : O you that reject Faith ! I do not worship that which you worship, Nor you will worship that which I worship. And I will not worship which you have worshipped, Nor you will worship that which I worship.To you be your Way, and to me mine.
7. Say Allah-o-Akbar, and bow down. This position is called 'Ruku' then recite tasbih (three times)
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمُ
Subhana rabbiyyal azeem
Praise be to my Great Lord
8. Say :
سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ
Sam`e Allah holeman hameda,
Allah listen to those who praise Him
And go back to "Qiyam"
رَبّنَا لَكَ الحَمدُ
Rabbana lakal hamd.
All praises be to You my Lord
9. Say Allah-o-Akbar and prostrate. This position is called sijdah and recite tasbih three times.
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأعْلَى
Subhana rabbiyal aala (three times)
Glory be to the Lord, the most High.
10. Say Allah-o-Akbar and rise from the 'Sijda' then sit in straight position for a while and prostrate again and repeat the same tasbih.
11. Say Allaho Akbar and go back in Qiyam.
This completes one 'Rakat.
12. The position of 'Qiyam' is assumed once again to begin the second Rakat, and the following prayers are recited:
13. Recite 'Al Fateha' as cited above
14. Add other sura of Holy Quran e.g.
o لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ o اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ o قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
o وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًاأَحَدٌ
Qul ho wallaho ahad. Allah hus samad. Lam yalid walam yulad .Walam yakullahu kufo wan ahad.
Say ; He is Allah, the One and the Only.
Allah helps and does not need help.
He has no children , And He was not born of anyone.
There is no one equal to Him.
15. Then all the actions must be repeated up to second sijdah.
16. Then Recite Tashahhud ( Attahiyyato ------)**
Atta hiyyato lillahe wassala waato wattayyebaat. Assalamo alaika ayyohan nabiyyo,wa rahmatullahe wa barakaatohu, Assalamo alaina wa ala ibadillah hissaleheen, Ash hado alla elaha illal lah, wa Ash hado anna Mohammadan abdohu wa rasulohu.
All verbal, all physical and all monetary worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you O` Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Peace be upon me and all the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and Messenger.
**During recitation of Tashahhud, when we reach "Ash hado alla elaha illal lah" one should raise the right index finger to indicate that there is only one Allah.
17. Then Recite Salat Alan-nabi ( Darood Sharif)
اَلَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى ُمحَمَّدِ ُّوعَلَى اَلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى
اَلِ اَِبْرَاهِيْمَ اِنَّكَ حَمِيْدُ مَجِيِدْ
Allah humma salle ala Mohammadiun wa ala aale Mohammadin kama sallaita ala Ibrahima wa ala aale Ibrahima innaka Hamidum Majeed.
O Allah! send grace and honor on Mohammad and on the family and true followers of Mohammad just as you sent Grace and Honor on Ibrahim and on the family and his true followers. Surely, you are praiseworthy, the Great."
اَلَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمّدِ ٌوعَلَى اَلِ مُحَمّدٍ
كَمَابَارَكْتَ عَلَى اِبْرََاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى اَلِ اِبْرَاهِيْمَم اِنَّكَ حَمِيُد مَّجِيدْ
Allah humma Barik ala Mohammadiun wa ala aale Mohammadin kama barakta ala Ibrahima wa ala aale Ibrahima innaka Hamidum Majeed.
"Oh Allah, send your blessing on Mohammad and the true followers of Mohammad just as you sent blessings on Ibrahim and his true followers. Surely you are praiseworthy, the Great."
18. Then say Dua :
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbana Aataina Fid Duniya Hasanataun wa fil akhirate Hasanataun wa qina azaban Naar.
"Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of the fire!"
19. Having said the above prayers, turn the face to the right and say
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ
Assalam alaikum wa` Rahmatullah .
Peace be on you and Allah's Mercy
Then turn the face to the left and say the same again.
This completes a two-rakat prayer.
In order to perform a Three Rakat Namaz all the postures and the prayers are the same upto second Rakat. After reciting Atta-hiyyat, say Allaho Akbar and go into Qiyam position.
When you offer Three Rakat Farz of Maghrib, in the third rakat in Qiyam recite only surah Fatiha and go in the Ruku and complete the rakat as per the procedure.
Book No.16 hadis No.107 of Bukhari Sharif
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar : The Prophet said, "Night prayer is offered as two Rakat followed by two Rakat and so on, and if you want to finish it, pray only one Raka which will be Witr for all the previous Rakat." Al-Qasim said, "Since we attained the age of puberty we have seen some people offering a three-Rakat prayer as Witr and all that is permissible. I hope there will be no harm in it."
When the witr Salat (Namaz) is recited , then in third rakat after reciting surah Fatiha and a surah, raise both hands upto the ears (palms facing the Qiblah) say "Allah-o-Akbar" and hold the left hand with the right hand on top. Then recite Dua-e- Qunoot
Allah humma inna nastaeenoka, wa nastagh feroka, wa no`meno beka, wa nata wakkalo alaika, wa nusni alaikal khair. Wa nash koroka walaa nak foroka, wa nakhlao wa natroko, maiye yaf jorok, Allah humma iyyaka na`budo, wa laka nusalli, wa nasjudo wa illaika nas`aa, wa nah fidu wa narju, rah mataka, wa nakhsha azabaka, inna azabaka, bil kuffaare mulhiq.
O Allah! We seek Your help; ask your forgiveness and have faith in You and have Trust in You. We praise You for all the good things. We are grateful to You and not ungrateful to You. We break off with all those who are disobedient to you. O Allah! We worship you alone and pray exclusively to You and bow before You alone and we rush eagerly towards You .And we fear Your severe punishment and hope for Your Mercy as your severe punishment is surely for the unbelievers.
Then the rakat should be completed as per the above proceedure.
In order to perform Four Rakat of Farz Namaz:
After completion of two rakats a person has to resume the Qiyam position and then recite only surah Fatiha in third and fourth rakat and do not add any surah then complete the Namaz.
When we perform Four Rakat of Sunnat Namaz then in third and fourth rakat surah should be added after surah Fatiha and then complete the Namaz.
Please remember, If one misses any Farz in any salat, the salat will be invalid. In that case the same salat has to be performed again. If a Wajib is missed unintentionally, one can make Sijdah Sahv to make up for it.
After completing tashahhud in the final sitting position turn face only to the right with salam and then saying takbeer, Allaho Akbar and perform two sajdeh, one after the other, peacefully. After the second sajdah, one has to repeat tashahhud, durood, etc and complete the prayer in usual way.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet prayed two Rakat of Zuhr prayer (instead of four) and he was told that he had prayed two Rakat only. Then he prayed two more Rakat and finished them with the Taslim followed by two prostrations.
Volume 1, Book 11, Number 683: Sahi Bukhari
Surah No. 4 ,Al-Nisa Ayat No.101
وَإِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي الأَرْضِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَقْصُرُواْ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ إِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَن يَفْتِنَكُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ إِنَّ الْكَافِرِينَ كَانُواْ لَكُمْ عَدُوًّا مُّبِينًا
When you travel on earth or if you have fear of non believers, who may upset you, it is no offence if you curtail your prayers.”
Ahadis ( Plural of Hadis)
1. It is referred in one of the Hadis :” While travelling or if you have fear of an enemy you recite only two rakats of Farz ( Fard ) Salat of Zohar,Asr and Isha Instead of four rakats.It is not mandatory to recite sunnat salats except sunnat of Fajar and witr of Isha in the above situation .” [ Ref : Tashrihul Quran by Mufassir Maulana Abdul KarimParekh Saheb ]
2. Narrated Ibn Abbas :
The Prophet once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we travelled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer.

3. The question was submitted on 5/10/2009 has been answered by the IslamiCity Imam.
Imam Saheb Aakm. When we travel and stay at a place for 15 days or less, can we shorten our Zohr,Asr and Isha Farz salah for the whole period. If yes, then shall we recite sunnah or shall we leave them. If we have time can we recite the salah in normal way without shortenning the Zohr,Asr and Isha Farz salah. Please reply.
If one is going to his own home town then he can not shorten the prayer no matter how long he is staying there.
If he is going away from his own home town then he has to shorten the prayer if he intends to stay less than fifteen days.
If you are praying behind an Imam in a local Masjid then you have to pray complete Salah without shortening.
If you are praying alone then you have to shorten the Salah. Sunnah prayers are exempted while travelling.
If one wants to pray Sunnah prayer then he/she has to pray them in full and should not shorten the Sunnah Prayer. Shaikh Sayed Sabiq states in Fiqhus Sunnah, 036 : 2.112 When the traveller is to pray the complete salah:
In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is recorded that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Prophet stayed, during some of his journeys, for nineteen day and he prayed only two rak'at. If we stayed in a place for nineteen days, we would not pray the complete salah. However, if we stayed longer than that, we would perform the whole salah.
" Ahmad states that ibn 'Abbas was referring to the Prophet's stay in Makkah at the time of its conquest when he said: "The Messenger of Allah stayed in Makkah for eighteen days during the time of the conquest as he had to go to Hunain and was not planning to stay there." This is his interpretation of Ibn 'Abbas' statement. Others say that Ibn 'Abbas was referring to the Prophet's stay in Tabuk as Jabir ibn 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah stayed in Tabuk for twenty days and performed qasr salah."
Imam Ahmad related this in his Musnad. Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah reports: "We stayed with Sa'd in some of the cities of ash-Sham [Syria] for forty days, and Sa'd would perform qasr while we would offer the whole salah.
" Naf'i relates: "Ibn 'Umar was in Azerbaijan for six months, as there was snow blocking the pass, and he would pray two rak'at.
" Hafs ibn 'Ubaidullah says: "Anas ibn Malik stayed in ash-Sham for two years and he prayed the salah of a traveller." Anas relates:
"The companions of the Prophet stayed in Ram Hurmuz for seven months and they shortened their salah.
" Al-Hassan reports: "I stayed with 'Abdurrahman ibn Samurah for two years in Kabul, and he shortened his salah but he did not combine the salah.
" Ibrahim says: "We resided in Rai for a year or more and in Sijistan for two years... [and we prayed qasr].
This is the guidance of the Prophet and his companions, and this is the correct position. Imam Malik, ash-Shaf'i and Ahmad say: "If one intends to stay for more than four days, he should perform the whole salah, and if he intends to stay for less than that, he is to offer qasr.
" Abu Hanifah holds: "If one intends to stay for fifteen days, he should not do the qasr. If he intends to stay for less than that, he should shorten the salah." This is also the opinion of al-Laith ibn Sa'd, and it has also been related from three companions: 'Umar, ibn 'Umar, and Ibn 'Abbas. The four imams agree that if one has some need to take care of and always has the intention of leaving the next day, then he may shorten his salah for as long as he is in that state.
However, according to one statement of ash-Shaf'i, he may do so only for seventeen or eighteen days and he is not to shorten his salah after that time.
Ibn al-Munzhir states in his Ishraf: "The people of knowledge are in agreement that a traveller may perform qasr as long as he does not intend to stay in a place, even though he stays there for years." May Allah guide us all to the straight path! Wassalam and ALLAH knows best.
4. Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:
"I saw Allah's Apostle delaying the Maghrib prayer till he offered it along with the 'Isha' prayer whenever he was in a hurry during the journey." Salim narrated, "Ibn 'Umar used to do the same whenever he was in a hurry during the journey." And Salim added, "Ibn 'Umar used to pray the Maghrib and 'Isha' prayers together in Al-Muzdalifa." Salim said, "Ibn 'Umar delayed the Maghrib prayer because at that time he heard the news of the death of his wife Safiya bint Abi 'Ubaid. I said to him, 'The prayer (is due).' He said, 'Go on.' Again I said, 'The prayer (is due).' He said, 'Go on,' till we covered two or three miles. Then he got down, prayed and said, 'I saw the Prophet praying in this way, whenever he was in a hurry during the journey.' 'Abdullah (bin 'Umar) added, "Whenever the Prophet was in a hurry, he used to delay the Maghrib prayer and then offer three Rakat (of the Maghrib) and perform Taslim, and after waiting for a short while, Iqama used to be pronounced for the 'Isha' prayer when he would offer two Rakat and perform Taslim. He would never offer any optional prayer till the middle of the night (when he used to pray the Tahajjud)."

Skipping the Salat (Qaza Namaz)
1. Hazrat Anas (ra) had narrated that the Prophet (saws) has said that if a person forgets to recite any salat, he should recite the same afterwards.
( Bukhari ,Muslim )
2. Hazrat Abu Huraira (ra) had narrated that the prophet (saws) has said that if a person slept and misses a particular salat, it will be no sin. But the sin is, if he skips salat when he is awake. When a person forgets to recite the salat or if skips while sleeping then he should recite the same afterwards.

3. Narrated Mu'adha:
A woman asked 'Aisha, "Should I offer the prayers that which I did not offer because of menses" 'Aisha said, "Are you from the Huraura' (a town in Iraq?) We were with the Prophet and used to get our periods but he never ordered us to offer them (the Prayers missed during menses)." 'Aisha perhaps said, "We did not offer them."
